The July 6th, 2018 membership meeting of the Kanawha Amateur Radio Club, Inc., (KARC) was held at the Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority (KCEAA), 601 Brooks St., Charleston, WV, 25301.Social Time: Set aside for extra time for Program.

Program: Dxpedition Bouvet Island Experiences with Hal Turley, W8HC Presenting - Hal shared the experience following the Garmin GPS Tracking which was available and followed by many of the KARC members. Hal shared the staging preparation from packing of equipment , flights, ship education to become a seaman, loading of the ship, calm and the rough sailing at sea, view of volcanic glaciers, seal winds, food, failure to arrive due to climate conditions, rerouting of route back to land and cost.

MEMBERSHIP Meeting: The membership meeting was called to order at 7:40 PM by President, Terry Sanner, WV8V, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and introduction of attendees.

Minutes: Ann, KA8ZGY, distributed the minutes of the June 1st, 2018 meeting, which were reviewed and accepted as presented.

 

Treasurers/Finance Committee Report: Alan, KB8VDA, presented the June 30th, 2018 financial report as checking account balance of $6,152.94 with $4,238.00 as Trailer fund. It was moved by Joe, WV8WVU, seconded by Terry, WV8V to accept treasurers report as presented.

BUSINESS SESSION:

CUB Scouts: Terry, WV8V, announced, he, Fred, WV8FV, Dave, W8IW, and Joe, WV8WVU attended the week of June 4-8, 2018 Cub Scout gathering at Coonskin Park, set-up demo stations for low band with keyer and explained the process/purpose of on-the-air communications to 15 groups. Many of the scouts and families shared an interest in furthering their interest in amateur radio. Discussion of Cram Course in near future.BOY Scouts (BSA): Terry, WV8V reported the BSA has established a Morse Code Patch with the purpose of the scouts learning Morse code. Terry propose a 6-8 week class for 5 words per minute (wpm) and will move forward with contacting local BSA to schedule.

Field Day (FD): Terry, WV8V, reported KARC FD Score was 5,034 which was lower than usual as a result of antenna and rotor failures which decreased on-the-air time but the operators did not give up making contacts. Also, it was noted there were several new operators working to gain experience with equipment in FD operations.

KARC Radio Equipment: Alan, KB8VDA, treasurer reported the Yaesu ICOM 7300 transceiver has been added to the equipment insurance policy.
Terry, WV8V, reports that all equipment has been housed in one storage location to provide access for review/repair as needed and has a copy of the equipment insurance policy to confirm all equipment is noted.

Repeater Site: Terry, WV8V, reports repeater had lightning strike, and is not on full power at this time. It appears, there is a loss of the 50 amp power supply along with amplifier issues with Jim, WB8YST, and team planning on accessing the site Monday to assess loss and repair as possible.

The repeater Timer needs reset and Jim, WB8YST and Jim, N8TMW are working with the repeater manufacture to obtain code/walk through process to access and make changes as needed.

NEW BUSINESS:

KARC Field Day (FD) Site:   Steve, KB8VNN, shared the need for a more site with more exposure for the annual FD event and suggests Shawnee Park as it has been renovated and recently opened.   Terry, WV8V, reported a group would review the area for possibilities.

 

WVSARC ARRL WV State Convention Booklet Booster Page: Terry, WV8V, circulated Booster Page Donation form to those attending and received a total collection of $25.00 which was presented to Ann, KA8ZGY WVSARC Secretary to submit to the WVSARC Treasurer at meeting July 21st, 2018.
