The Charleston Area Hamfest and Computer Show, Inc. January 11, 2018 meeting was held 5:30 PM at the Shoney’s Restaurant, Kanawha Boulevard, Charleston, WV.

The meeting was called to Order by President, Randy Damron, N8XEA.

Moment of Silence: A “Moment of Silence” was held for Bill Hunter, K8BS, a long time support for the Hamfest, for amateur radio, technical support and trustee for repeater, and was awarded the 2013 Kanawha Valley Amateur of the Year award.

Minutes: Ann, KA8ZGY, presented minutes of the November 2nd, 2017 (from Jim, N8TMW, acting Secretary) with motion to approve minutes by Ann, KA8ZGY, seconded by Randy, N8XEA and motion approved.

Treasurers Report: Report via ‘cell phone text’ to Jim, N8TMW from Jimmie, WD8MKS as - treasury balance of $3,455.75 with CD of $5,000.00 plus. Treasury report accepted as presented.

Election of Officers: Randy, N8XEA presented the Slate of Offices as the previous officers and called times three (3) for nomination from the floor with none heard. It was approved by acclamation the previous officer elected:

President: Randy Damron, N8XEA

Vice President, Jim Damron, N8TMW

Secretary: Ann Rinehart, KA8ZGY

Treasurer: Jimmie Hewlett, WD8MKS


General Business:

  • ARRL WV Section Convention: Randy announced the Charleston Hamfest      is now an Official sanctioned convention. This provides for an ARRL      representative to attend and provide a ARRL program. The speaker has bee selected, however,      that person has not been confirmed by ARRL Headquarters. The ARRL Forum and ARES Forum will be      combined as one forum. More information to come.
  • Yaesu Representative: Cory Sickles, WA3UVV, will be presenting      program on Yaesu Fusion™ System.
  • SERA: Randy reports the WV Coordinator in Hillsville, VA has be contacted      and plans to attend or send literature.
  • RADIO SHACK: Randy reports the Radio Shack manager has been contacted, plans to      attend and will need tables.
  • Radio Museum:Randy reports the Radio Museum group will be      returning and will need 10-12 tables.
  • Forums:After      lengthy discussion is was decided to have the following at 10:00 AM      ARRL/ARES®; 11:00 AM Yaesu Fusion™ ; 11:00 AM WVSARC Meeting: 12Noon ARRL VE Exams.
  • Table Update:Rick report he has a tentative floor      arrangement, however is waiting for specific Civic Center location because      of ongoing construction. At this      time he has about 34 tables reserved with one vendor location      questionable.
  • Security: Edsil will coordinate number and location of stations. Terry volunteer to solicit assistance      from KARC members.

  • Load-In: Randy will contact Juan, KC8MDW   to assist with load in on Friday      afternoon (3:00 PM) and Saturday morning (6:00 AM) along with other      Hamfest/KARC volunteers.


  • Set-Up Time: Friday, March 24th start at 3:00 PM; Saturday, March 25th      6:00 AM.


  • Ticket Sales: Randy reports Jimmie indicated the need to order tickets, followed      by discussion to have more space for signature/call/etc. information, and      add “must present ID to receive prize”.       Randy will purchase tickets from Charleston Blue Print      (2000/$100.00) or additional if price break.


  • Ticket Booth: Randy reports the ticket booth outside should be available for use      which no matter the location defined.       Terry will solicit KARC volunteers to sell tickets.


  • Entry Fee: Same as last year - is $7.00 and Tables are $12.00 with electric $10.00.


  • 50/50 Drawing: Randy suggest having ongoing 50/50 drawing      during hamfest.


  • Website: Edsil reports he has no update to report at this time. Jim reported the Hamfest Flyer and other      information is on the KARC website.


  • Prizes: Jim report he has received the major prizes: 1st -      $500.00 cash; 2nd – Alinco 2 meter mobile and 3rd –      Jetstream power supply with 2nd and 3rd prizes      coming from DBJ Electronics, and also four (4) Dual Band HT as door      prizes. Jim reported he was able to order the four (4) HT for a package of      five (5) for $100.00. Ann asked if      there were prizes for the Forums. Other prizes will be the packets from      ARRL and vendors in attendance. Discussed follow with recommendation to      order an additional five (5) HT’s, if there was a same package deal.


  • Talk –In: not confirmed at this time – Jim will follow – up.


  • Charleston VE Cram Course: Terry reported there will be a Cram Course on      March 10th, 8:00 AM at the KVEAA and indicates this may provide      more candidates for the Hamfest VE Testing.


  • Hamfest Meetings: Scheduled for February      6th, 5:30 PM Shoney’s, and March 6th, 5:30 PM      Shoney’s.



There being no other business it was move and approve the meeting be adjourned.
