The August 3rd, 2018 membership meeting of the Kanawha Amateur Radio Club, Inc., (KARC) was held at the Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority (KCEAA), 601 Brooks St., Charleston, WV, 25301.Social Time: Enjoyed by attendees.

Program: TOWER SAFETY – Mike Null, NU8LL, discussed tower climbing safety, and presented demonstration of harness positioning; climbing belt; dead fall cable (which is a one time use item), guide wires, guide wire loops; tower pulley; cable tightening; ginpole clamp; utility rope vs static rope; bolt cutter; cable cutter; tower carry bag and long socket set. Mike stressed safety was the key work when climbing a tower.

MEMBERSHIP Meeting: The membership meeting was called to order at 7:10 PM by President, Terry Sanner, WV8V, followed by the introduction of attendees and Pledge of Allegiance..

Minutes: Ann, KA8ZGY, distributed the minutes of July 6th, 2018 meeting, which were corrected and accepted as presented.

 

Treasurers/Finance Committee Report: Alan, KB8VDA, presented the August 3rd, 2018 financial report expenses paid for Field Day and PO BOX, and ending checking account balance of $6,027.91 as checking account balance with $4,238.00 as Trailer fund. It was moved by Rudd, KE8DMB, seconded by Fred, WV8FV to accept treasurers report as presented, motion carried..

BUSINESS SESSION:


BOY Scouts (BSA): Terry, WV8V reported the BSA has established a Morse Code Patch with the purpose of the scouts learning Morse code. Terry proposes a 6-8 week class for 5 words per minute (wpm) to begin in September – more information to come.

Field Day (FD): Terry, WV8V, reported final KARC FD Score was 4,970 after some issues were resolved.  

KARC Radio Equipment: Terry, WV8V, reports as the result of the lightning strike to the repeater, the repeater amplifier was damages and costs $284.00 to repair; two power supplies were taken to CSI for repair which will cost $135.00 each; and purchase of surge protector about $26.00. Alan, KB8VDA, will update the equipment insurance policy with the current power supplies and amplifier. It was noted to always save the original boxes for equipment in case of need for shipping for repair. Terry also reported the CW Radio keyer circuit will need to be repaired. He indicated that some of the repairs money may need to come from the Trailer Fund. No further action at this time.

WVSARC Booklet/Booster Page and Room/Meal Reservations: Ann, KA8ZGY reports the KARC ad was submitted for the Convention Booklet at the cost of $20.00 for the full page. She also shared that rooms/meals reservation are available for weekend package or single night – contact Ann.

KARC Field Day (FD) Site:   Terry, WV8V, reported additional site suggestions of Army Reserve Installation at Southridge along with Shawnee Park.   Terry, WV8V, reported a group would review the areas for possibilities

NEW BUSINESS:
ARRL EC Kanawha County: Terry, WV8V reported Jason Means, W8KTM, has stepped down from the EC Kanawha County and Mike Maxson, W8SI, ARRL WV Section Emergency Coordinator will be accepting application for replacing – if interested in applying, visit www.ARRL.org site for ARES information to find qualifications, etc.

 

WV AuxCom: Terry, WV8V, reports Jim Mangus, WB8YST, indicated another AuxCom class will be available on August 18th. Jim is working on developing a class/program for WV – more information to come.
